Food and Nutrition - Breaking Food Habits to Stay Young

You are what you ate which is reflected on your physical and mental health and your appearance. Nutrition determines the body's internal chemistry and that chemistry determines, in a large part, the quality and resiliency of virtually every organ, cell and system in the body.

 

Everything from the condition of your skin to the quality of your bones, brain and connective tissue is determined in part by what you eat. Thus eating habits are a major determinant in how quickly you begin to see and feel the effects of ageing.

 

It is important to break the following negative food habits that can age you from the inside out and ways to break the habits.

  • Junk Food

     

    Avoid food with hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils as these fats cause internal inflammation and lead to the body's inability to regenerate organs and shorten lifespan;

     

  • Sugar

     

    Avoid refined sugar - consume honey and maple syrup. When the body is unable to break down large amounts of sugar, it will in the process makes you look older by creating wrinkles. The sugar molecules gum up the collagen in your skin which makes it less elastic and wrinkling it faster, and if it's damaged it won't heal as quickly;

     

  • Carbohydrate Overload

     

    Consume a diet rich with complex carbohydrates such as legumes, vegetables and 100% whole grains. Excess carbohydrates not only stresses the body but also creating a pendulum effect i.e., a burst of sugar followed by insatiateness. This can age the body by leading to type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and heart disease.

     

  • Eating only when Hungry

     

    Keep healthy snacks on hand and do not wait until hunger trigger your ghrelin. The hormone ghrelin is released when your brain senses hunger. It can take up to half an hour to normalize your ghrelin levels and will most likely trigger over-eating and that can lead to obesity; and

     

  • Eating while Stressed

     

    Relax while eating. Cortisol, a stress hormone, can prevent digestion. It impact the stomach's acidity levels preventing nutrient absorption and can lead you to make unhealthy food choices and overeat.
